Working with both pencils and pixels

Hi, I'm Stefan and I'm an illustrator and graphic designer based out of Toronto, Canada. I have over twelve years of combined experience working as an artist, animator, designer, and creative director. My varied background has helped me develop a diverse and comprehensive skillset.

I have a keen interest in the progress of industry trends - especially when it comes to User Interface Design and the future of Illustration in an increasingly digital world. I'm also available for part-time freelance work... just sayin'.

About

BIO

After graduating from college in Ottawa, I began working as a freelance artist in the film & television animation industry, and eventually broadened my skillset to include print and web design.

Working as Creative Director at Fenix, I spent a great deal of time bridging the gap between client requests and client needs. I gained invaluable insight into managing projects so they meet three targets; client satisfaction, innovation, and team happiness. To this day, these remain my three professional goals.

After moving to Toronto in 2009, I worked freelance for a time, and now work full-time as a Senior Interactive Designer at 6Degrees. I create websites, online ads, and interactivities with a small but dedicated and skilled team.

Projects

RunMonsters!

RunMonsters! started about a year after my first webcomic was launched (see below). I tried to implement all the things I had learned from that first twelve months; primarily trying to workout the bottleneck when it comes to art production. The content for this comic is much more varied and comes from the oddball conversations that take place at work.

Gone to Ground

Launched in April 2009, Gone to Ground was my first webcomic. It was started with a friend, partially as a learning exercise, and partially because Josh and I love to poke fun at the source material. Gone to Ground is based on the tabletop strategy game Warhammer 40K. Visit the site for a quick intro, or start reading from the beginning!

Klaveer

In September of 2009 I discovered that someone had pilfered my website code and made it available as a torrent. Flattering, but the bad news was they didn't know enough to remove the analytics code, killing all my reporting. Realizing there wasn't much else I could do, I created a free HTML template based on my site, but excluding any important personal stuff. Visit the site to download a copy or view a demo.

Blog

Editorial, production, and commercial illustration.

Stock imagery has become so popular, and yet (by necessity) so grossly accessible. that it has taken on a recognizable style all its own. Don't risk sending the message that your organization is unoriginal or uninspired, and instead purchase custom, commissioned illustrations. It's more affordable than you'd think.

Logo design with a greater attention to detail.

In the age of social networking, maintaining control of your brand is nigh impossible; so first impressions are more important than ever! Having a professionally designed logo that resonates with your target audience can make the difference between sink and swim, and I'd like to help keep you afloat.

User-focused themes built for various CMS solutions.

Having a good Content Management System makes maintaining a website much less of a hassle, but limiting yourself to a generic template can feel a bit unsatisfying. With my practical insight into products like WordPress and Tumblr, I can design your custom theme - and build it too!

Interface design so good people are stealing it!

If Picasso said "good artists borrow, great artists steal", I don't think this is what he had in mind! Even after making my site's code available as a free template, people are still pirating it and claiming it as their own. I guess it says something about my skills at usability and interface design.
